About the Course

This course will focus on the forge welding, shaping and heat treating of tools commonly used in Japanese sword crafts. This includes, but is not limited to, chisels, plane irons and carving knives of various designs. Woodworkers and sculptors will find this course useful for making hard to find or specialty tools not found in the usual tool inventory.

The welding of hard tool steel to a soft iron back was a common technique in the West as well, providing a tough and resilient body with an easily sharpened hard edge

The forging of traditional san-mai construction will also be addressed.

We expect this course to have broad appeal to woodworkers of all disciplines who wish to work with high quality tools of their own making.
